To ALL the CRAZY CAT LADIES I’ve NEVER ❤️
I am a FEMINIST. which means I believe in equality. But when a childless man or older man lives with a bunch of cats I don’t call him a “crazy cat man”. I usually just call him “one of a kind”. and slowly back out of his house.
But when I see a woman – like you – with a A LOT of cats I think “you’re a C-R-A-Z-Y cat lady.” I even thought of being a cat lady for Halloween but I don’t have the right complexion. 🤣
All jokes aside, I am guilty of perpetuating the stereotype that women – like you- who choose to have A LOT of cats are “CRAZY” – because why else would YOU have THAT many cats? Why didn’t you get married or have children?
And in there lies the problem. Why is it I only think of female owners of cats – like you – as “CRAZY”, but not male owners? Sometimes stereotypes are so ingrained into society that they become “norms”. And with “norms” you’re guilty until proven innocent. I would know.
I’m a black single mother in America.
What’s the first thing you think of? Be HONEST.
• There’s no ring on her finger. She must not be married. I wonder if she knows who her baby daddy is? I’ve seen girls like her on Maury.
• I wonder if she have a job? Or is she just “living off” the government? Smh
• I wonder if she have more than one kid? Probably. I mean, she’s 30. 🤭 I wonder how many baby daddy’s does she have? I bet more than one. 🙄
As someone used to being judged, I often feel humiliated and incredibly frustrated when people make assumptions rather than ask questions.
So (insert YOUR name). I know that you own multiple cats, and I apologize for using this information as a sign of your mental state.
[Some unsolicited – but “friendly” advice – you should probably address your portrayal in books, tv shoes, films, plays, musicals – basically all forms of print and digital media and entertainment. but that’s just my “friendly” advice. Fell free to ignore it.]
I will admit that I’m still am not the biggest fan of cats – personal preference – but that should not AND will not stop me from respecting your choices and asking questions instead of assuming your reasons for cat ownership.
My sincerest apologies,
